DRAPER, Utah --- It was a somber day in a Saratoga Springs neighborhood Sunday as many people mourned the loss of a good friend and neighbor.
Sgt. Derek Johnson of the Draper City Police Department was killed in a shooting in Draper Sunday morning, and in the officer’s neighborhood white ribbons have been tied around trees and signposts in his honor.
Neighbors also placed several American flags at the home of the fallen officer.
Neighbor Ryan Koller said Johnson was a man who did his duty as a police officer and as a father.
“If I can just let everybody know what kind of a person he was: He was so dedicated to his work and to his family; that kind of dedication doesn’t come with everyone,” he said.
Neighbor Katie Louw said Johnson was a wonderful person.
“He was just helpful and thoughtful and kind and considerate, and he loved his neighbors, and we loved him," she said.
Neighbors said they will rally around Johnson’s wife and young son. They said their hearts are breaking, and they said they wished there was more they could do.
A candlelight vigil was held at Draper City Hall Sunday night for the fallen officer. In the video below, two young children light candles for Sgt. Johnson and place them among flowers and other offerings from well-wishers.
