LOGAN, Utah — Utah State head coach Matt Wells said that defense wins championships – and that certainly was true for the Aggies Saturday.
The Aggie defense held the Wyoming Cowboys scoreless for three quarters and won the game 35-7 Saturday afternoon.
Utah state’s offense didn’t have a bad game, either. Freshman quarterback Darell Garreston threw for three touchdowns, and he went 20-of-29 passing for 156 yards in the game.
Joey Demartino ran for 112 yards and one touchdown for the Aggies, clinching the Mountain Division Championship of the Mountain West Conference.
Wyoming scored their first and only touchdown in the fourth quarter after a 60-yard pass from Brett smith to Dominic Rufran; Smith was held to 82 yards passing before this play.
Now that the Aggies are the Mountain Division champions, they are headed to the Mountain West Conference championship game next weekend to take on Fresno State.
Fresno State suffered their first and only loss to San Jose State on Friday.
