CLINTON, Utah – A child was killed and two adults are listed in critical condition after a wreck near Clinton Elementary School Wednesday afternoon.

Clinton Police Chief Bill Chilson said a man veered into the wrong lane and smashed into a woman headed in the opposite direction in an SUV.

A 4-year-old child riding in the man’s car was killed, while a second child in the car escaped without any serious injuries. Both drivers were transported to a hospital in critical condition.

Nearby resident Dale Bowers said he was working outside in his garage when he noticed the car swerve into the other lane.

“Then I just walked out and saw the accident right there,” Bowers said.

The crash nearly totaled the man’s car, according to Bowers, pinning the driver inside.

“They had to pick him out,” Bowers said. “They had to pull him out and carry him to the ambulance because his legs were broken.”

In the backseat, Bowers said he noticed a baby in a car seat, who seemed to be OK. However, he did not see a second child.

“He was screaming and yelling and crying for his baby,” Bowers said.

Authorities believe, because the accident occurred before school had ended for the day, the man was likely traveling at about 40 mph when he struck the woman driving the SUV.

“The woman didn't say much,” Bowers said, “She was really stunned.”

The crashed remained under investigation Wednesday evening.
