SAN DIEGO — Utah State defeated 23rd ranked Northern Illinois 21-14 in the Poinsettia Bowl to win their second straight bowl game for the first time in school history.
USU running back Joey Demartino ran for 143 yards and a touchdown.
NIU quarterback Jordan Lynch was a Heisman Trophy finalist, after he averaged 144 yards rushing per game and 205 yards passing per game. But the Aggies held him him to just 39 yards rushing and 216 yards passing.
The Aggies finish the season with a 9-5 record, and their win total ties for the second-most in school history.
