WEST VALLEY CITY – The southbound lanes of Bangerter Highway between 3500 South and 4100 South were temporarily closed due to 4-vehicle crash Friday afternoon, and at least two people have injuries that are serious or critical.
The accident occurred around 1:16 p.m. at 4100 South and Bangerter as a northbound vehicle crossed a median and hit an 8-inch in diameter pole before colliding head-on with a southbound vehicle.
Sgt. Chad Evans said the two other vehicles did not make contact with the two cars that collided but instead hit the pole after it came down.
The driver of the vehicle that crossed the median was taken to a hospital by helicopter in critical condition. The driver of the car that was struck by the first car sustained serious injuries and was taken to a hospital via ambulance. The occupants of the other cars were not injured.
Police officials at the scene said the driver of the car that crossed the median, a male in his 20s, might have been distracted, possibly texting.
