SALT LAKE CITY --A female victim from the reported shooting early Tuesday morning was an escort called to the residence where the incident took place, police said Tuesday afternoon.
Salt Lake City Police said the woman was called to 1856 S. 1200 East where Steven Skinner, 32, is the resident.
During the meeting between the woman and Skinner, police say, a handgun was shown and a scuffle ensued.
"Both parties sustained gunshot wounds," police stated.
Around 4:17 a.m., police started receiving multiple reports of a shooting at 1856 S. 1200 East, according to a posting on SLCPD's twitter account.
The shooting victims were transported to area hospitals and are in serious condition.
Police said the scene was contained and there was not a threat to nearby residents.
Sharon Ewer, who lives nearby, said she and her boyfriend woke up hearing cries for help. Ewer said her boyfriend then went to assist the woman who had been shot.
"The landlord where we live also came to the scene and he walked up and saw that there was a man laying on the couch naked and also had been shot," Ewer said. "I don't know who shot who or how, but [the female victim] claimed that she had been raped."
The investigation is ongoing, police say.
