HERRIMAN, Utah – A 19-year-old man died Sunday while swimming in a pond in Herriman.

Reports began to come in just before 6 p.m. after witnesses reported they had seen a person swimming in Blackridge reservoir go under the water and then not resurface.

Officials with the Unified Police Department said 19-year-old Joey Pantoja was swimming across the body of water with a friend when he went under. Pantoja’s friend was unable to locate him.

Crews searched the lake for about 30 minutes before finding the man. Efforts to resuscitate him were not successful and he died at the scene. Crews estimate the man was under 13 to 16 feet of water for about 40 minutes.
