ALLENTOWN, Pa. — A 19-year-old mother was seen throwing her baby off a bridge into a Pennsylvania river on Sunday in an apparent attempted murder-suicide.

The incident happened on the Hamiton Street bridge in Allentown, Pennsylvania, around 1:45 p.m. Sunday.

Witnesses told police a 19-year-old woman was pushing her 1-year-old in a stroller when she tossed the baby boy into the Lehigh River seconds before jumping from the bridge.

Rescuers found the baby 700 yards down stream and were able to perform CPR. The woman was found unconscious under the bridge, according to lehighvalleylive.com.

The baby and mother are listed in “serious condition” but are both expected to survive, according to Allentown Police Capt. William Reinik

“I commend these two officers for actually going into the river and pulling him out and doing CPR. That’s what saved this baby’s life…,” Reinik told WFMZ.

Police are calling the incident an attempted murder-suicide. It’s unclear if charges will be filed against the mother, who has not been identified by police.

The investigation is ongoing.
