An eagle propels Jessica Sloot, Davis High School to 5A girls golf state championship

SALT LAKE CITY -- After reaching the par five 16th hole in two shots, Davis High School junior Jessica Sloot had an eagle putt that could give her the lead with just two holes to play in the second and final round of the 5A girls’ golf state championship.

Sloot read the putt perfectly, and she gave it just enough speed to drop in for an eagle, helping her win the individual state championship by one shot over Lone Peak sophomore Kerstin Fotu.

“It was crazy,” Sloot said of the eagle putt on 16. “It just hung on the edge for what seemed like forever when I was waiting for it to drop.”

Laura Gerner of Davis finished third, just two shots between Sloot. The two juniors led Davis to their second straight 5A state championship.

“I have wanted this forever, since I was a little kid and started golf,” Sloot said. “This really means the world to me and I couldn’t be happier right now. It’s just as good to share it with my entire team and be able to celebrate with all of them.”
