OGDEN, Utah — One male is dead and another male is in critical condition after a single-vehicle car accident in Ogden late Saturday night.

The victims are also suspects in a beer theft at a 7-Eleven, 803 24th Street, which occurred minutes before the fatal crash, according to Ogden City police.

At about 10:35 p.m., witnesses told police two males went into the convenience store and took beer without paying ,then fled the scene in a white pickup truck.

The suspects were involved in a minor accident with another car then continued to drive north on Quincy Avenue from 24th Street, police say.

At about 10:38 p.m., police received reports of an accident involving a white pickup truck in the area of 1300 block of Valley Drive. The preliminary investigation indicates that it was the same truck involved in the beer theft, police say.

Police say the driver of the pickup was traveling east on Valley Drive at a high rate of speed when he was unable to come around a sharp curve in the road.

“The truck struck the guardrail and the two occupants were ejected from the vehicle,” according to a press release from Ogden police.

One of the men, 21-year-old Daniel Hernandez, was pronounced dead on scene. The second male was taken to an area hospital in critical condition.

Police are not releasing the name of the second occupant due to the ongoing investigation. No charges have been filed at this time.

Police suspect alcohol was a factor in the crash and it appears neither of the occupants in the truck were wearing seat belts.
