WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah — A 15-year-old girl suffered serious injuries in West Valley City when she ran across the street while not in a crosswalk and was struck by a westbound vehicle Thursday evening.

Roxeanne Vainuku, a spokeswoman for the West Valley City Police Department, said the crash occurred as the girl was crossing 3100 South near 5400 West, in the area of the West Valley City Family Fitness Center.

The teen was crossing in an area where there is not a crosswalk, and while eastbound traffic was able to avoid her, the girls was struck by a westbound vehicle.

Emergency responders initially listed the girl as being in critical condition, but after working on her for some time they upgraded her condition to serious and canceled their request for a helicopter at the scene. The girl was instead taken by ambulance to Jordan Valley Medical Center and will from there be flown to Primary Children’s Hospital.

Vainuku did not provide specific details about the nature and extent of the injuries, but she said while the teen is in serious condition, she is expected to survive.

The driver involved in the crash remained at the scene.
