WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah -- A woman was hit and killed by a car in West Valley City Wednesday night while crossing outside of a crosswalk.

Sgt. Jason Johnson of West Valley City Police said the fatal crash occurred around 9:30 p.m. near 4100 South and Redwood Road.

"It appears an adult woman attempted to cross Redwood Road in the middle of the block," Johnson said. "A northbound car struck her, she was pronounced dead on the scene."

The deceased is a 40-year-old woman and her name has not yet been released.

The driver, a man in his 20s, remained at the scene and has been cooperating with police.

Johnson said it is not uncommon for residents in that area to cross without using the crosswalk in order to reach some nearby businesses. Police encourage pedestrians to exercise caution.

"When somebody steps out into traffic there’s a certain amount of time that’s required for someone to make a decision, recognize that problem, apply the brake or do some evasive driving: And I don’t think that was the case here," Johnson said.

Police also urge drivers to be alert for pedestrians, especially given the cooler temperatures and with the start of school.
