TREMONTON, Utah — One person is in police custody after shooting at officers in Tremonton Sunday night, hitting at least three.
Tremonton Garland Police officers responded to a "disturbance" in the area of 700 North and 200 East, near North Park Elementary School, around 9:30 p.m. No further details about the "disturbance" were provided.
The Brigham City Police Department (which is handling the public information for the incident) said the suspect fired at officers. Officials confirmed that three officers were shot. However, they would not confirm if any had died.
Brigham City Detective Crystal Beck said the officers who were involved had called for backup, but then at some point, they stopped responding on their radios.
The City of Tremonton originally posted a message from Mayor Lyle Holmgren claiming two police officers had been shot and killed; however, both the city and Holmgren later retracted those comments.
The suspect was later taken into custody after a massive police response with units from neighboring police agencies. Their name has not been released.
Police said there is no threat to the public as of 1:20 a.m., but they still asked the public to avoid the area. Residents nearby were under a "shelter in place" order. They added that there were no reports of civilians injured.
A resident of the area drove up to the scene near his home when a bullet struck his car.
"I thought there was somebody lighting off fireworks," said Randy Kidman. "I come up the road, and I saw two cop cars and something in the road, and decided it wasn't a good situation. I went to go back out, and when I went to back out, I caught a bullet through the driver's side door and it went out my windshield. So I dove-tailed and ran and ran home and called my wife and told her to come outside, make sure I didn't have no holes in me. It's pretty freaky."
