SOUTH OGDEN, Utah — A suspect is in custody after two people were shot during a South Ogden incident that began late Thursday in which police were fired upon in what was described as an ambush.

James Joseph Rios, 45, has been arrested and faces two charges of attempted murder.

The South Ogden Police Department said its officers were called to the area of 1300 East and 5800 South after reports of shots being fired in the area.

When officers arrived, they said they witnessed a woman running from the area, at which time several more shots were fired in her direction.

Following officers coming under "ambush fire" and calling for backup, which brought in police from surrounding jurisdictions and the Ogden Metro SWAT team, an exchange of gunfire occurred between Rios and a SWAT officer.

After a period of time, Rios was convinced to surrender and was taken into custody. Police say they found a long rifle inside Rios' home and an unspent rifle round in his pocket when he was taken into custody.

After Rios was apprehended, police later found two neighbors who had been shot prior to police arrival. The victims were taken to local hospitals in unknown conditions.

Rios was interviewed by police after his arrest and claimed he fired at his neighbors who live across the street. Rios told police that he warned his neighbors to stay inside, but after they exited the home again, he opened fire.

Detectives say Rios admitted to watching his male neighbor fall to the ground and shooting the neighbor's wife shortly after.

The incident is currently under investigation, which is being led by the South Ogden Police Department and the Weber County Attorney's Critical Incident Team.

"Our hearts go out to those who were injured and impacted by this incident. We also cannot thank the members of this community enough for their support in helping to resolve this situation together," the South Ogden Police Department said in a statement.

James Joseph Rios is being held without bail.
