SOUTH JORDAN, Utah — The driver who crashed into a South Jordan lake last week and was rescued by witnesses has died of his injuries, police said Friday.

On April 17, video showed the truck speeding through a Daybreak neighborhood before hitting a parked car and driving into Oquirrh Lake before overturning. Witnesses who saw the crash said the driver was unconscious when he was pulled from the water.

The unidentified driver was been hospitalized in critical condition before passing away from his injuries. The cause of the incident is still under investigation, South Jordan police said Friday, but has released that speed was a factor.

Witnesses said the truck sped past them before going into the water.

"I jumped in the water and I started checking the truck to see if there was anyone inside of there as best as I could," said Christian Doffermyre. "And then another man jumped in with me and we both were able to undo his seatbelt and get him out of the truck."

Once Doffermyre and the other man brought the unconscious driver to shore, other bystanders gave him CPR.

Drone video showed the truck near a boat ramp and pier that went into the lake. Police said the boat ramp is usually closed off to traffic or boat drop-offs.

"It's super surreal," admitted Doffermyre of his part in the rescue. "I didn't really think today would go like that.

"It's so crazy to me."
