HERRIMAN, Utah — One person was killed in what was called an industrial accident at the Bingham Canyon Mine early Thursday.
According to the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office, 37-year-old Brian Carneli was working on a piece of heavy equipment in a maintenance shop on Rio Tinto Kennecott property when a large boom collapsed on top of him.
Fellow employees rendered first aid to Carneli following the accident, but were unable to revive him, and he died at the scene. A LifeFlight helicopter that had been dispatched to the mine to transport Carneli was called off.
"These types of incidents are tragic for everyone involved," said Salt Lake County Sheriff Rosie Rivera. "Our thoughts are with Mr. Carneli's family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time."
The Bingham Canyon Mine is one of the largest in the world, with Rio Tinto employing more than 2,000 people at the location.
