SALT LAKE CITY — An employee at a Salt Lake City 7-Eleven store has been arrested on suspicion of running over a retail theft suspect with his car.

According to a probable cause statement, Ronald James Kirkham, 60, attempted to stop the suspect who fled the store on foot Tuesday.

Kirkham got into his personal vehicle and followed the suspect in an attempt to detain him for police.

During that process, Kirkham “struck the retail theft suspect (victim) with his vehicle, driving over his legs, and then proceeded to crash the vehicle into the neighboring home, causing severe structural damage,” the statement said.

Kirkham then left the scene with his vehicle and called 911.

Officers contacted Kirkham and booked him into the Salt Lake County jail on suspicion of aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury, a felony, and other suspected crimes.

The statement did not specify which 7-Eleven store where the incident happened.
