HURRICANE, Utah — A group of people attempted to steal an ATM from a bank in southern Utah early Saturday morning, but were unsuccessful.

According to a press release from the Hurricane City Police Department, several suspects stole a truck, trailer and heavy equipment between Friday night and Saturday morning from the Hurricane area.

Then, around 4 a.m., they used the stolen equipment to try to remove the ATM from a Wells Fargo branch. They failed to remove it, but caused thousands of dollars in damage to the machine and building. They fled the scene and crashed a short distance away.

Police were unable to find the suspects, but say they are following several leads.

The stolen truck, trailer and heavy equipment were recovered from the scene of the crash and were returned to the owners.
