WVC Police: 29-year-old man arrested after shooting at officer, fleeing, abandoning vehicle

UPDATE: West Valley City Police have now identified the suspect as 29-year-old John Samora, saying he faces charges of attempted homicide on a police officer, "related to shots fired at our officer earlier."

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah — One person is in police custody for shooting at an officer on Saturday afternoon, according to West Valley Police.

Around 4:30 p.m., a West Valley City Police officer was conducting a VIN inspection on a vehicle near 3400 South and 4000 West when someone in an unrelated vehicle fired four shots at the officer, according to department spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku. The officer was not hit, and the suspect fled, leading officers on a pursuit that went into South Salt Lake and Salt Lake City.

The police pursuit was terminated after a Salt Lake City Police patrol car struck a sign near 1200 S. Navajo St. in Salt Lake City.

The suspect vehicle — a red Kia crossover SUV — was later found abandoned in South Salt Lake.

The suspect was later arrested at a traffic stop in a white sedan near 3800 West and 4700 South.

No names have been released.
