As we head into fall, there are some things homeowners should be checking around their homes.
Mitch McIntyre, a Certified Field Inspector for Groundworks Salt Lake City, joined us with a fall home checkup list:
- New or growing drywall, brick, or foundation cracks.
- Sticking doors and windows.
- Uneven or sloping floors.
- Gaps between walls, floors, doors, or windows.
- Sinking or uneven driveways, sidewalks, patios, and steps.
- Moisture or musty odors in basements and crawl spaces.
Mitch says the Salt Lake Valley has a variety of soil types and geologic conditions. Some local soils can be more susceptible to movement as moisture conditions change.
He says when soil moves or settles, it can affect both the home's foundation and surrounding concrete.
Conditions can vary by location and from home to home.
If a homeowner does notice cracks or other changes, it doesn't necessarily mean there's a serious problem.
Mitch says homeowners should pay attention to changes that are new, growing, or appearing alongside other warning signs.
