UTAH COUNTY — A driver is in serious condition after being struck by a freight train near Mapleton Friday evening.

According to the Utah County Sheriff's Office, the 61-year-old man had turned off of U.S. Highway 89 at 2400 East near Mapleton and was hit by a southbound Union Pacific train.

He was taken to a hospital in serious condition by a medical helicopter.

The railroad crossing runs parallel to U.S. 89 at the point where the accident occurred, just feet from each other. There is no crossing arm, but there is a stop sign, which officials say the driver failed to stop at.
