MIDVALE, Utah — A man was shot and killed by police in Midvale Friday evening.
Unified Police said they were looking for 24-year-old Joseph Schultz of West Valley City who was wanted for multiple robberies and shootings in recent weeks. He was located at Motel 6 in Midvale on Friday, where he and three passengers fled from police in a vehicle.
Police spiked the tires, but Schultz continued to drive off before coming to a stop at the intersection of 7200 South and Bingham Junction Blvd., according to Sgt. Melody Cutler.
Schultz and two other passengers, 19-year-old Jeannie J. Brereton and 29-year-old Sasha A. Jones, then fled on foot.
A fourth passenger, 22-year-old Matthew C. Knowlden, got out of the vehicle and fired one round at officers with a handgun, Cutler said. Officers fired back, striking and wounding him. He was transported to a local hospital where he died.
Schultz, Brereton and Jones were apprehended and taken into police custody.
As is protocol with "officer-involved critical incidents," a team made up of outside police agencies will investigate the shooting.
