BEAR LAKE COUNTY, Idaho — Search and rescue teams recovered the body of a possible drowning victim from Bear Lake Sunday afternoon.

The Bear Lake County Sheriff's Office said they were notified of the possible drowning Saturday around 7:30 p.m. when kayakers saw a man — later identified as 27-year-old Martin T. Garcia of Logan — fall off an inflatable tube into the water near the lake's North Beach. They paddled toward him to help, but he disappeared under the water before they could reach him and did not resurface.

A multi-agency search began immediately Saturday evening before it was paused due to lighting and water conditions.

The search resumed early Sunday morning, and Garcia's body was detected by sonar and recovered around 1 p.m. in about 6-8-foot deep water.

The North Beach boat ramp was closed to the public during the search while the beach remained open for day use.

A GoFundMe account has been set up for Garcia's family. Click here to view or donate.
