SALT LAKE CITY — The first man to don the Utah Jazz's iconic Bear mascot costume has passed away.
Jon Absey spent nearly 25 years behind the "Jazz Bear" mask, starting back in 1994.
Last year, he announced that he was battling pancreatic cancer.
Family and friends of Absey confirmed Saturday that he passed away from the disease.
"Rest in Peace, Jon Absey," the Facebook page Jazz Nation wrote. "We are grateful for your exceptional contributions both on and off the court."
Rip Jazz Bear 🖤

Lost Jon Absey today…the original Jazz Bear. A friend who brought so much love and friendship to so many in the community and beyond…@utahjazz Keep his family in your thoughts. Despite his illness, Jon stayed positive and continued to ask what he could do for you. Legend 🙏
