BOX ELDER COUNTY, Utah — A new wildfire broke out Monday afternoon in a remote area of northern Utah.
State wildfire officials said the East Promontory Fire was first reported around 3 p.m. It is burning in Box Elder County, about 18 miles south of Howell and just north of the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge.
The fire grew to an estimated 362 acres, driven by the wind, but officials said around 6 p.m. that its forward progress has been stopped. Its containment is estimated at 50%.
Some nearby ranches and power lines were threatened at one point.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
