SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah — A hiker has died after falling 700 feet in a rock slide near Bells Canyon Saturday morning.

The Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office said the call first came in around 8:45 a.m., when witnesses reported seeing someone slip in a rock slide.

The Sheriff's Office said the victim, a 49-year-old man, was a solo hiker who was attempting to ascend "one of the more rugged peaks" in the area when the fall occurred. A doctor who was hiking in the area was the first to arrive and attempt to render aid. The hiker was pronounced dead at the scene.

After a thorough search by search-and-rescue crews, the office confirmed no other victims were injured in the rock slide.

A man who witnessed it all spoke with FOX 13 News and said it's likely that the water and rain from Friday night loosened some of the boulders that came tumbling down onto the man.

"It can be pretty treacherous,” Damon Stewart said. “When you go to the upper falls, you climb about 1,000 vertical feet in like 10 minutes.”
