VEYO, Utah — A young child died Monday after being left in a car in the summer heat.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office said they were called to the victim's home in Veyo around 6:10 p.m. They said dispatchers were initially unable to decipher what the situation was because the 911 caller was screaming.

First responders arrived and found the 3-year-old boy unresponsive. He was later pronounced dead.

Police say the toddler was left in the vehicle after a shopping trip with his family. It's not known how long he was left alone.

An investigation is underway. Officials have not said whether they expect charges to be filed.

"The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is saddened that this tragic incident occurred and extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and community this has affected," the sheriff's office said in Wednesday's press release.
